Coastal Wolves

An amazing animal I think of as being “the ghost of the coast”, they are also known as “sea wolves”, but officially as the coastal wolf. The images were taken in the Great Bear Rainforest along the coast of British Columbia in Canada .

I have always wanted to spend time with wolves , I live in Sweden now and although we have some packs around it is very difficult to see and photograph them as they are hunted frequently, both legally and illegally. I found the perfect place to do this in the Great Bear Rainforest, I have not done much work in rainforests before but this was a great experience which came with its own set of challenges. It was the first place I have been that I needed a raincoat under my raincoat! When the rain comes down it comes down heavy , also due to the damp conditions it was difficult to dry the clothes and equipment , nothing wakes you up faster than climbing into wet clothes first thing in the morning.

Coastal wolves are genetically different from all other wolves and in some areas up to 90% of their diet comes from the ocean, from a wide variety of sources eating anything they can find on the tidal zone , from salmon to dead whales . They have also often been documented killing black bears and chasing grizzly bears. They are incredible swimmers and have been recorded making journeys of up to 8km by water when travelling amongst the islands off the Canadian coast.

Searching for these wolves was a real test of patience but it really was worth the effort.
